We are often asked by potential adopters to help them find a specific purebred breed. The reason is that they have a specific breed in mind but do not want to purchase a cat from a breeder. This is where rescuing cats out of the Middle East plays a role. There is an abundance of homeless purebred cats roaming the streets in countries like Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Why? We believe it stems from the common practice of purebred kittens who are bred, born, and sold in pet shops throughout the region. There are pet shops on every busy street corner and most sell purebred kittens for under $50. The pet shop owners show little to no regard for the cat's health or wellbeing, and anyone can take the kitten from the store home if they're willing and able to pay. This can end in dire consequences as many times they may end up in an abusive home, they are likely neglected, and when the cat's are no longer wanted, they are usually left to fend for themselves on the streets.
Unfortunately, there are few animal shelters to help homeless cats and dogs in these countries. Pet owners have poor access to spay, neuter or vaccine services, which leads to street cats producing over and over, adding to the overpopulation problem. Since there is no shelter system in place, when a pet owner must part with their cat(s) they usually just leave them behind. This is commonplace and not looked down upon.
The saddest part is that these kitties are sweet purebred cats (Persian, Turkish Angora, Himalayan, Ragdoll & Siamese cats) and not your common feral street cat who has the instincts to survive. Purebred cats have docile temperaments, and they have also been domesticated since birth. These cats have lost their survival or fighting instincts. Due to this they are at higher risk of injury and death. The temperatures can reach over 120 degrees in the hot summer months and they do not have access to food, water or shelter. There are also sick people who enjoy torturing cats, even poisoning them, or running them over with their cars! Yes this is commonplace, and not viewed as a crime. In most of these countries, there are NO animal cruelty laws or any consequences to these horrific acts!
There are a few but very dedicated animal loving people who have a rescue or shelter in either a rental apartment or within their own home or multiple foster homes. We work with a few groups that have developed great programs to provide the cats they rescue with all the proper vetting and medical care they need. All cats that travel to the USA are healthy and ready for adoption upon arrival.
